What Does Reset App Preferences Mean and How to Do It on Android

Quick Tips
  • App preferences are custom settings and configurations that control the behavior of an app on your Android device.
  • Resetting app preferences resets all the settings you enabled or changed for apps on your device.
  • Open Settings > Apps > All Apps > three-dot menu > Reset app preferences.

What Does Reset App Preferences Mean?

App preferences are settings and configurations that control the behavior of the installed apps on your device. These settings can be customized for each installed app, thereby changing the default settings.

For example, Google Chrome is the default browser, but you can install a new browser to make it the default. System apps have certain permissions enabled by default, but you can disable them if needed. Changing such settings changes the App Preferences on your device.

If apps are not behaving as expected, and you notice something wrong with your phone, consider resetting the app preferences.

What Happens When I Reset App Preferences?

  • The app’s permissions, such as access to your camera, microphone, storage, or location, will be reverted to their default settings.
  • Any notification settings or preferences you have set for the app will be reset. These include custom notification sounds, exemption from DND, etc.
  • Custom settings you have enabled for the app, such as custom fonts, theme/display settings, network & battery restrictions, etc., will be reset.
  • Resetting app preferences will also enable all the disabled system apps.

Therefore, resetting app preferences will restore any custom settings you have enabled within your device specifically for the app. Don’t worry—you will not lose any data.
