Method 1: Using Paragraph Borders
This option is best used to underline text in a paragraph. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Open Google Docs in your preferred browser and open the document you want to edit.
Step 2: Type the text you want underlined on the Google Docs canvas.
Step 3: Select the text and press Ctrl + U to underline it.
Step 4: On the Google Docs Ribbon, click the Format tab.
Step 5: Click Paragraph Styles and choose Borders and shading from the extended menu.
Step 6: Click the Bottom border option.
Step 7: In the Paragraph Padding section, set it to 0 pt.
Step 8: Click Apply to save your changes.
Method 2: Using the Drawing Tool
Step 1: Open Google Docs in your preferred browser and open the document you want to edit.
Step 2: Place your cursor on the Google Docs canvas in a location where you would like to insert the double underlines.
Step 3: On the Google Docs Ribbon, click the Insert tab.
Step 4: Select Drawing from the Insert menu > choose New.
Step 5: On the Drawing tool ribbon, click the line button.
Step 6: On the Drawing tool canvas, place your cursor, which should look like a +, and draw the first underline.
Step 7: Beneath the first line, draw another line.
Step 8: Click on Save and Close to close the Drawing tool. The newly created line drawing should now be on the Google Docs canvas.
Step 9: Click the new line drawing and select Behind text from the options shown.
Step 10: Move the double underline to the text you want to highlight.
Method 3: Using Equations
Step 1: Open Google Docs in your preferred browser and open the document you want to edit.
Step 2: Place your cursor on the Google Docs canvas in a location where you would like to insert the double underlines.
Step 3: On the Google Docs ribbon, click the Insert tab > select Equation.
Step 4: Type the following: \underline in the equation box.
Step 5: Hit the spacebar, and you will see a line form.
Step 6: In the equation box again, type the following: \underline and hit the space bar. Another line will form beneath the first one.
Step 7: After getting the double lines, write the text you want underlined.
There you have it. You have double-underlined text in Google Docs.
The standard text flow is from left to right when writing in English and most other languages. However, there are other languages where text is written from right to left. You can change the text direction in Google Docs to conform with the language you are working with.
