How to Make Spotify Use Less Mobile Data

Quick Tips
  • Enable Data Saver mode in the Spotify app from your profile icon > Settings and privacy > Data-saving and offline > Data Saver.
  • Lower Audio Quality and Video Quality from the Spotify app Settings, and enable the Audio-only mode for video podcasts.
  • Turn off the Canvas feature from the Spotify app Settings > Content and display > Canvas.

Method 1: Enable Data Saver in the Spotify App

If you notice a sudden spike in the Spotify app’s mobile data usage, enable its built-in Data Saver mode to optimize your data usage. It will lower streaming quality and disable other features, such as video previews, that consume a lot of data.

Step 1: Open the Spotify app > tap your profile icon at the top left > select Settings and privacy.

Step 2: Scroll down to select Data-saving and offline > toggle on Data Saver.

Method 2: Reduce the Audio Quality

Streaming high-quality audio in the Spotify app consumes significant data. You will quickly exhaust your mobile data plan if you continue listening in this mode. Reduce the audio quality manually to make Spotify use less mobile data.

Step 1: Tap your profile icon at the top left in the Spotify app and open Settings and privacy.

Step 2: Select Audio quality and set Wi-Fi streaming and Mobile streaming to Normal or Low, depending on your mobile data plan.

Step 3: Additionally, scroll down and toggle off Auto-adjust quality to disable the recommended audio quality settings.

Method 3: Reduce the Video Quality

Video streaming on the Spotify app uses more data than audio streaming. Further, streaming music videos in high quality can quickly deplete your mobile data plan. To save data, access Spotify settings to lower the video streaming quality.

Step 1: Access the Settings and privacy menu in the Spotify app (check the above steps) and select Video quality.

Step 2: Adjust Wi-Fi streaming and Mobile streaming to Normal/Low based on your mobile data plan.

Method 4: Adjust Video Podcasts Settings

If you like watching video podcasts in the Spotify app but want to use less mobile data, you can enable the audio-only mode for video podcasts. This will allow you to listen to the podcast without streaming its video, conserving mobile data.

Open Spotify settings > select Data-saving and offline > enable the toggles for Audio-only downloads for video podcasts and Audio-only streaming for video podcasts.

Method 5: Download Music for Offline Listening (For Premium Users)

Besides streaming music, premium Spotify subscribers can download albums, playlists, and podcasts for offline listening, saving both mobile data and device battery life. However, you can’t download individual tracks. Instead, download the entire album or add the track to your playlist for offline access.

Note: To keep your offline downloads on Spotify, go online at least once every 30 days.

Step 1: Open Your Library tab from the bottom-right in the Spotify app and tap + at the top right corner.

Step 2: Select Playlist, type your desired playlist name, and hit Create.

Step 3: Next, open your favorite song, tap its three-dot menu at the top right, and select Add to playlist.

Step 4: Pick your created playlist name and hit Done to add it.

Step 5: Finally, open your created playlist from Your Library > (Playlist Name), and tap the Download icon to make the entire playlist available for offline listening.

Method 6: Disable Spotify Canvas

Canvas is Spotify’s new feature that shows looping visuals when you play a song to enhance your listening experience. However, it consumes additional data to display it. If you have a limited mobile data plan, disable the feature to make Spotify use less mobile data.

Step 1: Open the Spotify app, tap your profile icon at the top left, and select Settings and privacy.

Step 2: Select Content and display and toggle off Canvas to disable the feature.

Restrict Spotify From Using Mobile Data

If Spotify continues to use excessive mobile data after implementing the above adjustments, restrict its data usage through your device settings. This option is available on iPhones and Android phones running HyperOS.

On iPhone

Step 1: Open the Settings app, select Mobile Service, scroll down to locate Mobile Data, and tap Show All.

Step 2: Toggle off Spotify to restrict its Mobile Data access.

On HyperOS Devices

Step 1: Long-tap the Spotify app icon and select i to open its App info.

Step 2: Scroll down to select the Connection method, uncheck Mobile data, and click OK to save changes.
