Preliminary Fixes
- Check if Twitter Is Down: Sometimes, the issue might not be with your device or network but with Twitter’s servers. Visit DownDetector or IsItDownRightNow to check the status of Twitter.
- Check Internet Speeds: A slow or unstable internet connection can prevent tweets from loading. Visit an internet speed testing site like Speedtest or Fast to check if the speeds are slow; try restarting your router or contacting your internet service provider for assistance.
- Force Stop the App: Force-stopping the Twitter app can resolve temporary issues that might be causing the problem. On Android, go to Settings > Find Twitter > Force Stop. In the case of iOS, Swipe up from the bottom of the screen > swipe up on the Twitter app preview to close it.
- Disable VPN or proxy: VPNs or proxies can sometimes interfere with the connection to Twitter’s servers. Disable any active VPNs or proxies and try reaccessing Twitter to see if the issue is resolved.
- Check the date and time settings: Incorrect date and time settings can cause issues accessing Twitter. Ensure that automatic date & time and automatic time zone are enabled on your device.
Fix 1: You Might Have Hit the Daily Limit
According to the current X CEO, there’s a limit to the tweets users can see daily. The rate limits are as follows:
- Verified accounts: 6000 posts per day
- Unverified accounts: 600 posts per day
- New unverified accounts: 300 per day
Since this has been said as a temporary measure, you might not see new tweets because of it. You can either subscribe to Twitter Blue if you are an unverified user or wait until the next day so that the limit will be restored (or removed entirely).
Fix 2: Clear Cache on Android and Browser
Cached data and cookies stored in your browser or Android can occasionally interfere with Twitter’s functionality. The best solution is to clear that up. Thankfully, we have already prepared a detailed guide on how to clear the Twitter cache on all platforms.
Once you clear the cache, see if the error is resolved. If it isn’t, move on to the next method.
Fix 3: Update the Twitter App
Outdated app versions can cause compatibility issues and errors like ‘cannot retrieve tweets at this time’. Ensure you have the latest version of the X app installed on your device.
You can check if X has any updates on the Play Store or App Store. If you see the Update button, tap on that.
Fix 4: Use X on a Different Device or Browser
If you are still seeing ‘cannot retrieve tweets at this time. Please try again later’ message, change the device or browser used to access it. Using a different device or browser lets you determine if the issue is device- or browser-specific or Twitter-specific.
If none of the above steps work, reach out to Twitter support for assistance.
