How to Fix Samsung Phone Screen Goes Black During Call

Quick Tips
  • Remove the screen protector; it could interfere with the proximity sensor.
  • Check for physical damage or cracks in the screen.
  • Try the Google Phone app instead of the default Samsung dialer.

Basic Fixes

  • Restart the phone: Sometimes, the screen goes black due to a minor software glitch. A simple restart can fix this issue.
  • Press the power button: If your Samsung phone screen remains black during a call, press the side (power) button to turn on the screen.
  • Clear proximity sensor area: The proximity sensor detects if the phone is near your ear during a call. If this area is blocked or dirty, the screen may go black. Use a soft cloth to clean the area near the front camera and check if it works.
  • Remove or replace screen protector: A thick screen protector can interfere with your Samsung Galaxy phone’s proximity sensor, causing the screen to go black during calls. To resolve this issue, remove the current protector and replace it with a high-quality one from a reputable brand.
  • Check for physical damage: Did you accidentally drop your phone? The black screen issue could be due to a damaged display. Check the screen for cracks and damage and repair it if necessary.

Fix 1: Update One UI

One UI is the interface Samsung phones use. If your phone’s One UI is outdated or buggy, it might cause the issue. To check for updates:

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Samsung phone.

Step 2: Tap on Software update > Download and install.

If updates are available, follow the prompts to download and install them. Once done, check if this fixed the black screen issue during calls.

Fix 2: Try Using the Google Phone app

If your Samsung phone still has a black screen during calls, try using Google Phone instead of the default Samsung dialer. Google Phone is available on the Google Play Store.

Step 1: Download and install the Google Phone app.

Step 2: Open Settings on your Samsung Galaxy phone.

Step 3: Go to Apps > choose default apps > Phone app.

Step 4: Tap the radio button for Google’s Phone app.
