Method 1: Clear Defaults for the Ringtone App
If you’ve accidentally set a third-party ringtone app (e.g. Zedge) to ‘Always’ instead of ‘Just Once’ while configuring the ringtone, you won’t see the default sound picker menu. To fix this and restore the default ringtone app, clear the third-party app’s default preferences.
Step 1: Long-tap the installed third-party ringtone app icon and select ‘i‘ to open its App info.
Step 2: Select Open by default and tap Clear default preferences.
Method 2: Reset All App Preferences
If you’ve multiple ringtone apps or can’t find an option to remove the default app preferences, you can reset them in one go using ‘Reset app preferences‘, nested in your Android system settings. This will clear default actions for all apps and file types on your phone.
Step 1: Open Android settings, select System, and tap Reset options.
Step 2: Select Reset app preferences and tap Reset.
Method 3: Use the “Better Open With” App
The native ‘Open With’ or ‘Complete Action Using’ menu simply lists the available apps. To make it smarter and curate your own app list, the ‘Better Open With’ app is an excellent alternative. Using this, you can complete your action (such as selecting a ringtone) without setting any app as default.
Step 1: Install and open the Better Open With app from the Google Play Store.
Step 2: Select your desired file type and tap the Star icon to set it as the default app. Alternatively, tap the Eye icon to hide it from the custom ‘Better Open With’ app list.
Step 3: Finally, select your preferred file, tap Better Open With, and choose the app to launch it. If you don’t decide before the five-second timer runs out, it’ll automatically use the default app (assigned in the previous step) to open it.
