Here’s how you can generate and download an OpenAI API key. We have demonstrated the process on a web browser on Windows. However, the process remains similar on any other mobile or desktop device.
Note: Make sure you have enough credits left before you add an OpenAI API key to a program. The API key is linked to your account and can only access OpenAI’s services if there are enough remaining credits.
Step 1: Go to OpenAI’s website on your web browser.
Step 2: Log in with your OpenAI account or create one if you do not have an existing account.
Step 3: Click on the Dashboard option.
Note: You will have to select a Project on the dashboard screen. By default, the Default Project is selected. You can create a new project as well.
Step 4: Click on the API Key option from the sidebar.
Step 5: Click on Create new secret key.
Step 6: You can either create an API key for a user, or for a service.
- Owned by You: The key is linked to an individual user. If that user leaves, the key will be disabled. The user can set the key name, choose the project, and define permissions (All, Restricted, Read-Only).
- Owned by Service Account: The key is linked to a service account, not a person. This account remains active regardless of team changes. You must create a Service Account ID, and choose a project.
Step 7: Once you select your preferences, click on Create secret key and copy the API key.
