How to Mute WhatsApp Group Notifications Permanently

Quick Tips

• On the desktop or WhatsApp web, navigate to the group you want to mute > click on three vertical icon > select Group info > toggle on Mute notifications.
• On WhatsApp mobile? Launch WhatsApp > tap the three-dot icon > choose Group info > toggle on Mute notifications > choose between time-frame > tap OK.

Note: WhatsApp syncs across devices. So, if you silence a WhatsApp group on a desktop, it will automatically be applied to your mobile device. The setting syncs seamlessly between devices without manual execution.

What Happens When You Mute WhatsApp Group Notifications

• Muting a WhatsApp group silences notifications for that specific group. You won’t receive any sound, vibration, or pop-up alerts when new messages are posted in the group.
• You can choose how long to mute the group—options include 8 hours, 1 week, or permanently. The always option mutes the group indefinitely until you manually unmute it.
• You will still receive all the messages sent in the group, and they will be available for you to read whenever you open the group chat.

How to Disable WhatsApp Group Notifications

On WhatsApp Desktop App or Web

Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your preferred browser or a desktop app.

Note: For the demonstration, we are going with WhatsApp Web.

Step 2: Navigate to the group you want to mute notifications for. 

Step 2: Under the group chat, click on the three vertical icons at the top right.

Step 3: From the drop-down menu, select Group info.

Step 4: In the right-side pane, toggle on Mute notifications. 

Step 5: Select the number of hours or weeks you want to mute the group notifications and select Mute.

How to Silent WhatsApp Group On Mobile

The steps are the same for Android and iOS. However, for this demonstration, we are going with an Android device. Follow along.

Step 1: Launch WhatsApp on your Android or iOS device and navigate to the group you want to mute notifications for.

Step 2: Tap the three-dot icon in the top navigation bar and select Group info.

Step 3: Scroll down and toggle on Mute notifications. In the Mute notifications pop-up, select between 8 hours, 1 week, or Always. Then, select OK.

There you go. You have successfully muted your WhatsApp group. You will not receive any notifications from this group, but you can still see the messages popping up.

How to Permanently Disable WhatsApp Group Notifications

Note: You can only perform these steps on the WhatsApp mobile app, as they are unavailable on the WhatsApp web or desktop clients.

Step 1: Launch WhatsApp and navigate to the group you want to mute notifications for.

Step 2: Tap the three-dot icon in the top navigation bar and select Group info.

Step 3:  Now, scroll down and select Custom notifications. Under Notifications, tap on Use custom notifications.

Step 4: Select Notification tone. From the list of Sound Ringtones section to None. 

Step 5: Additionally, select Vibrate. From the pop-up, select Off (or choose as per your preference).
