3 Fixes for Apple Notes Crashing on Mac Issue

Quick Tips
  • Open System Settings > Apple ID account name > iCloud > Show More Apps > Notes > disable Sync this Mac > enable again after a few seconds.
  • You must delete Apple Notes library files. This will ensure that any corrupted files causing the Notes app to crash are deleted.
  • Run Safe Mode on your Mac to detect any issues being caused by third-party apps on your Mac.

Basic Fixes

  • Check internal storage: Your Mac needs enough internal storage to run apps smoothly.
  • Force quit and relaunch the Notes app: Click the Apple logo > Force Quit > select Notes > Force Quit.
  • Update macOS to update the Notes app: This will install the latest version of the app on your Mac.

Fix 1: Enable iCloud Sync Again

Apple Notes is a solid note-taking application that offers many powerful user features, including collaboration, the ability to lock notes, tags for organizing notes, and more.

iCloud sync is the built-in solution on macOS that syncs your data and files across your Apple devices. However, sometimes, an error in iCloud sync may cause the Apple Notes app to misbehave on your Mac. So, try disabling iCloud sync for the Notes app and launch it on your Mac.

Step 1: Open System Settings > click on your Apple ID profile name.

Step 2: Select iCloud > Show More Apps.

Step 3: Click on Notes > disable Sync this Mac.

Step 4: Wait for some time and then enable it again.

Fix 3: Use Safe Mode

Since we are talking about a system app on Mac, you can run Safe Mode to troubleshoot any issues that third-party apps might be causing. The steps for Safe Mode vary depending on your Mac’s processor.

  1. Thank you so so much! I’ve been trying everything but what really worked was deleting the Data folder. Just in case, I did a back up manually of my notes before, but now I can tell it isn’t even necessary. When you enable the check box of iCloud of notes and open the app, everything is there! Thanks again

  2. I have the same problem with my Macbook Air M1. Having come across your article and read it through. I now have an understanding how to rectify the problem.

    Kind Regards
