Fix 1: Check the Requirements
First things first. There are certain requirements or basic conditions for the Customize Chrome button to show up. These are:
- The Customize Chrome button will only appear in the Google Chrome browser.
- It will appear only for the New tab page and not for Google.com. The New tab page usually looks like the Google search page only, but it’s different from it. It opens when you click on the New tab (+) button in the browser or press the Home icon.
Fix 2: Make Google the Default Search Engine in Chrome
Another important condition is that Google must be your default search engine in the Chrome browser. If it’s something else, the Customize Chrome button will not show.
Step 1: In the Chrome browser, click on the three-dot icon at the top > select Settings.
Step 2: Go to Search Engine > click on Change > select Google. If you have already selected Google as the default search engine, change it to something else, restart the Chrome browser, and change the search engine back to Google.
Fix 2: Sign Into Your Google Account
Next, set up a profile in Google Chrome and sign into your Google account if you haven’t already. To do so, click on the account picture icon at the top-right corner > click on the Turn on Sync button > sign into your Google account.
Fix 3: Log Out of Chrome
If you are already signed into your Google account, sign out from Chrome. For that, click on the account picture icon at the top > select Sync is on > click on Turn off > profile picture icon > select Sign out. Restart your computer and sign in again.
Fix 4: Remove Any New Tab Page Extension
There’s also a chance that the new tab page has been hijacked by an extension. For instance, I was using an extension that redirected the new tab page to something like a Google page. And I was left wondering why I don’t have the Customize Chrome button.
To fix it, check your list of extensions and disable any that control the new tab page as shown below:
Step 1: Click on the Extensions icon at the top-right corner of the Chrome browser.
Step 2: Then, click on the three-dot icon next to the extension and select Manage extension.
Step 3: Turn off the toggle for On.
Step 4: Restart the Chrome browser and open the new tab page to see the Customize Chrome button.
Fix 5: Reset Chrome Settings
Finally, if nothing seems to bring back the Customize Chrome button, try resetting Chrome. Please note that doing so will delete the Chrome shortcuts, disable extensions, and delete cookies and temporary site data among other things.
Go to Chrome Settings > Reset Settings > Reset settings to their original defaults to reset Chrome.
